Hot Star brought on two major design challenges.
Star hasmassive catalog of content, with shows running for decades without being broken by traditional "seasons". There are shows with thousands of episodes making it difficult for viewers to find what they're looking for within a show's story arc. We created search paradigms based on the character's ages and story lines to help user's find the content they were looking for.
Much of the content in India is on lower powered devices with expensive data options on cellular. We had to find creative ways to help alleviate these bandwidth restrictions. This included allowing for offline acccess to downloaded content and exploring ways for paying subscibers to share this content over bluetooth.

HotStar is an ubiquitous brand and needed to be easy to consume.
This platform could stream on any network and allowed for offline viewing when users were not on wifi and cellular rates or connection a problem for viewers.
With any streaming distribution platform it's vital to respect the branding of the individual shows and events.
We helped define a flexible branding system where by which each show's cards would reflect their indivudal brand colors, but still work within the greater design system.

Following the acquisition of Star India's parent company 21st Century Fox by Disney in 2019, Hotstar was integrated with Disney+ as 'Disney+ Hotstar' in April 2020.
